03 / Retirement income

A retirement conversation worth taking your time with.

An annuity is an insurance contract that may serve a retirement savings or income purpose. What it can do—and what it requires from you—depends on the contract.

Talk through your questions

Education, not an individual recommendation. Eligibility, costs, benefits, and availability depend on the actual policy or contract and authorized jurisdiction.

Begin with the purpose.

Are you exploring income now, income later, or another way to hold resources for retirement? When might you need access to the money? What other income and accessible reserves would remain?

Those questions help frame the discussion. Moving or replacing retirement assets is an individual decision, not a universal next step.

Contract types are not interchangeable.

Immediate and deferred describe when income is intended to begin. Fixed, indexed, and variable describe different approaches to contract value and risk. Indexed contracts follow stated crediting rules; variable contracts can involve market loss.

These are educational distinctions, not a statement that every type is available through The Legacy Bureau™. Offerings vary by product and jurisdiction. Ask which contract types are available for your situation.

Access has a price and a timetable.

A surrender period may apply. Withdrawals can trigger surrender charges, affect benefits, or involve a market value adjustment, depending on the contract. Some contracts provide limited withdrawal allowances, subject to conditions.

Fees and optional rider costs differ. Understand total costs, the length of restrictions, and what happens if you need more money sooner than expected. Tax consequences or penalties may also apply; obtain qualified tax guidance.

Know what the guarantee actually covers.

An income feature is not the same thing as unrestricted access to a cash balance. Payout elections, rider conditions, withdrawal behavior, and other provisions can change the result. Some income choices exchange flexibility for a defined payment arrangement.

Insurance guarantees depend on the issuing insurer’s claims-paying ability and the contract’s terms. They are not promises of market performance. Compare the contract with your needs and alternatives before deciding.

A few useful questions

Let’s make room for the details.

Does every annuity provide lifetime income?

No. Income features depend on the contract and elections made. Ask how payments begin, how long they last, what costs apply, and what happens at death.

What if I need the money early?

Review surrender charges, withdrawal allowances, adjustments, and the effect on any income benefits. Keep the need for accessible funds central to the conversation.

Should I roll over an existing retirement account?

There is no universal recommendation. Compare costs, benefits, tax treatment, access, existing protections, and your individual circumstances before considering a move.
